Week 2 Story: The Man in the Moon

Image
The Girl in the Moon:  Savannah had never needed to be the center of attention.  She was rather shy, and felt more comfortable on the outskirts of groups.  She loved to observe the interactions within her friend group, but was never hesitant to speak her mind when asked.  Her two best friends were Katie and Ashley, and although Katie and Ashley were closer, Savannah had always felt at home with them.  As she and her friends grew older, she found herself more and more isolated and sometimes wished she had tried harder to be included.  Katie and Ashley had become very popular and were opposite sides to the same coin.  For all of Katie's bubbly brightness, Ashley offered a cool darkness, and the pair was inseparable.  Savannah found herself incessantly questioning where she fit in now.  She wasn't popular, she wasn't outgoing, and she certainly wasn't the polar opposite of either Katie or Ashley.  She felt like she had lost the only two friends she'd ever trul

Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology

Image
Reading Notes: Week 2 Anthology (Photo by  Pixabay ) These readings were really fun! I really enjoyed 2 stories, in particular, and found 1 more dull than the rest.  You can find my notes regarding these 3 below!  Loved:  The Man in the Moon  and  The Hare Who Was Not Afraid to Die Reasonings: Honestly, I absolutely love the moon and I have no idea why.  I'm always drawn outside when there's a nice clear night with a bright moon and a cool breeze.  I can totally see why the man would've thought that it would be nice to be the moon.  I liked the Hare in the second story because he was just trying to be good and he was totally willing to die for his beliefs. He stuck to his morals and I think there should be more of that. Maybe not the the point of death. Hopefully you catch my drift?  Hated:  The Indian Who Wrestled the Ghost Reasonings: So many. SO SO many reasons.  I thought it was not a great rendition. It didn't keep my attention a

Week 2 Reading Overview

Untextbook Plan: Below you will find my Untextbook plan.  I am particularly excited to read stories from the British and Celtic Units.  Having British, Irish, and Scottish heritage, I want to know more about the folklore from those regions, in particular.  I have also taken Italian so I am excited to read Italian stories, as well!  (Photo by Pexels) If I had to choose one region to add to this course, I would say that Scandinavian and Norwegian folklore is fascinating and could be really cool to add to this course!  Week 3:  The Illiad Week 4:  The Odyssey Week 5:  Folktales of Bengal Week 6:  Ancient Egyptian Myths and Stories Week 7:  Japanese Mythology Week 9:  Tibetan Folk Tales Week 10:  Eskimo Folk Tales Week 11:  Myths of the Cherokee Week 12:  Celtic Fairy Tales Week 13:  Faerie Queen . Week 14:  Italian Popular Tales Week 15:  Dante's Inferno

Time Strategies

Time Strategies  (Photo by  Wikimedia Commons )  Schedule Review:  As a procrastinator to the extreme, I've tried to veer away from that with the schedule emailed to me by Laura.  I should have no excuse to not have everything completed in advanced, but we all know how that goes.  At least I have extra time available on the weekends to try to do extra credit or work ahead!  Four Questions to Help You Overcome Procrastination Procrastination is ALWAYS, UNDOUBTEDLY my biggest downfall during a semester.  I trick myself into thinking I have tons of time and leave everything to the last minute.  This has put me struggling to catch up to my peers on numerous occasions and I'd love to break the habit now.  I loved this article because it gave me simple, non-stressful things to ask myself to help me get motivated.  My favorite was choosing 3 Biggest Priorities for the day.  I hope to employ this in the future.   How to Build a Realistic Study Plan That You

Technology First Impressions

Image
Technology Isn't For Everyone  To be honest, I have experience with the Word Count Extension, Bookmarks, and Spellcheck.  None of this helps me, however, as I promptly forget how to use everything approximately two minutes after I step away from my computer.  It always takes me a moment to get going again when using any type of technology, so this may be a perpetual struggle for me.   This online environment is pretty foreign to me.  Most of my online classwork has been done through canvas exclusively, but challenge and change is good!  Here goes nothing! Wish me luck, please and thanks! (Photo by  Public Domain Vectors )

Mythology and Folklore Assignments

Image
First Impressions  Format: The point/honor based format of this class is dissimilar to any class I've taken before.  I like that I know the base number of points I need to get for a specific grade.  It makes prioritizing a lot easier for me.   Assignments:  I'm all about reading, so I'm pretty pumped that a large part of this class is going to be reading weekly with opportunities to read more for extra credit!  (Photo by  Flickr )  I'm pretty uncomfortable with the project feedback aspect, however.  I've had a couple nightmare experiences with other students not quite understanding the "constructive" in "constructive criticism."  I adore feedback which actually helps an individual grow, but there is always a tactful way to address giving feedback and I can't stand when feedback given is hurtful, whether intentionally or unintentionally.  I believe that being truthful is important but there is always a kind way to conv

Growth Mindset

Image
Growth Mindset and Influencing the Future My Stake:  As a current and forever student, as well as an individual who intends to become an educator, I have a high stake in learning what effectively helps students.  I love learning how to better help others learn.  It's a passion, an incessant need.  Watching the video about Carol Dweck, I saw a way to better myself to help my students in the future.   How to Implement:  By fostering an environment which encourages the "not yet" mindset for students, an educator can instill values which will be imperative to success in the world after education.  Students grow up and (hopefully) become productive members of society if they are given the proper tools to succeed.  Tools can come in a variety of ways, and I intend to foster the "not yet" mindset when working with students.  I've dabbled with the idea of one day going back for a master's degree to be able to work with elementary school aged kids wi

Introduction to Tricia the Dog-Mom and History Major

Image
My Introduction My name is Tricia and I'm 24 years old.  I'm a senior at OU majoring in History. I hope to one day become a high school Social Studies teacher and dance team coach.  Below you'll find a few more things you may want to know about me!  I'm originally from San Antonio, Texas, but moved to Freeport, Illinois when I was about 5.  I technically lived in Illinois until I left for college at 17, but I spent summers with my grandparents back in Texas.  I'm an only child and when I left for college, my parents high-tailed it right back to Texas and are now settled in Lakeway, Texas, right outside Austin on Lake Travis.   (Texas Flag Photo by  Wikipedia ) I went to Northern Michigan University for 2.5 years before taking a little time off to live in Lakeway with my parents and then I transferred to OU.  At NMU I majored in Political Science and minored in Dance.  I was a competitive dancer for about 10 years and really miss dancing a ton.

Storybook Favorites

Image
Browsing the Storybooks  Finding 3 Favorites When perusing the storybooks of past students, I frantically searched for something that I knew ANYTHING about.  Overwhelmed by the plethora of titles and links to past works, I honestly was just looking for something to latch on to long enough to understand what my project would look like.  I, luckily, stumbled upon 3 storybooks which caught my attention rather quickly.  I may not know mythology and folklore, but if there's two things I know like the back of my hand, it's housewives and summer camp.   THE REAL HOUSEWIVES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY (Photo by:  Wikimedia Commons ) The introduction of this storybook, created for a class in the past, is engaging and perfect for anyone who is interested in the drama which tends to follow housewives.  By employing an almost advertisement-esque narrative, the blogger who created RHWOGM entices readers to go on to the first episode,  "All is fair in love and war.&quo

My Favorite Place

Image
My Favorite Place:  Marquette, Michigan  One of my favorite places in the world is Marquette, Michigan.  Located in the Upper Peninsula, Marquette is home to Northern Michigan University and is adjacent to Lake Superior.  Included below, you will find a couple of pictures of my favorite locations in Marquette! As a college town, Marquette is a very busy place during Autumn.  Between homecoming for the local high school and Northern Michigan University, there is always something going on downtown .  The downtown area has many hills and runs right down to Lake Superior.  The colors change so rapidly during the fall that even when you can't see the lake there is always a beautiful view right around the corner! There are bakeries, small restaurants, and mom and pop shops all throughout downtown! My favorite is Donker's, but I couldn't find a usable picture of it, so here is a view of downtown Marquette, instead!  ( Photo by Tony Webster ) Another of
