My Favorite Place

My Favorite Place:

Marquette, Michigan

One of my favorite places in the world is Marquette, Michigan.  Located in the Upper Peninsula, Marquette is home to Northern Michigan University and is adjacent to Lake Superior.  Included below, you will find a couple of pictures of my favorite locations in Marquette!

As a college town, Marquette is a very busy place during Autumn.  Between homecoming for the local high school and Northern Michigan University, there is always something going on downtown.  The downtown area has many hills and runs right down to Lake Superior.  The colors change so rapidly during the fall that even when you can't see the lake there is always a beautiful view right around the corner! There are bakeries, small restaurants, and mom and pop shops all throughout downtown! My favorite is Donker's, but I couldn't find a usable picture of it, so here is a view of downtown Marquette, instead!

Another of my favorite spots in Marquette is Presque Isle Park! During the winter, the roads in the park are closed off and certain areas become dangerous due to high winds and waves rolling in from Lake Superior, but the beauty of Presque Isle Park in winter is unrivaled.  Luckily, in the summer the water is crystal clear and provides the perfect place to cool off during the day!

  1. Those pictures look wonderful, Tricia! Michigan is not a state that I know well; I've been to Ann Arbor once, but that's all. That picture from Presque Isle is a very different kind of landscape that anything I know, and it looks beautiful. Maybe you will enjoy learning about some of the storytelling traditions from around the Great Lakes regions. Here are a couple of books in the Freebookapalooza that might be of interest:
Myths and Legends of the Mississippi Valley and the Great Lakes, edited by Katharine Berry Judson
Myths and Legends of Our Own Land — 6: Central States and Great Lakes by Charles M. Skinner
And this is a fabulous book of African American folktales collected in Michigan:
Negro tales from Pine Bluff, Arkansas, and Calvin, Michigan by Richard Dorson
