Week 12 Reading | Celtic Fairy Tales Part B

Image
Reading Notes Celtic Fairy Tales Part B Photo by Pixabay King O'Toole and His Goose : Why was the goose so important? What was the special significance of it??? Who is this Saint Kavin, and why does he have the power to make old things new? I have so many questions which arise from this story and I'm super confused through most of it.  I didn't realize that Saint Kavin was in disguise, so I was confused when he revealed himself.  This story was not really my style.  The Shee An Gannon and the Gruagach Gaire : I like that it starts out right away establishing that the Shee an Gannon was supernatural.  I've read a lot of folklore about the Sidhe, or the Shee and I was hoping they'd make an appearance! I think it was incredibly cunning of the Shee an Gannon to get himself hired by the Gruagach Gaire.  That's one thing I absolutely love about reading stories of the Sidhe, they're always so cunning and influential to those around them, includin...

Week 12 Reading Notes | Celtic Fairy Tales, Part A

Celtic Fairy Tales: Part A Photo by Flickr Connla and the Fairy Maiden : Right away, I'm super intrigued by the idea of the Hill Folk.  I was definitely surprised when she called him away to Moy Mell.  I'm not convinced that Coran the Druid actually got rid of her when she vanished... The apple feels a bit sketchy to me.  Yep, totally knew she'd be back.  I really thought Connla would have been strong enough to resist her charms, so I was really caught off guard when he sailed away with her.  I wish there would've been a bit more detail in this story, everything really happened super fast.  The Field of Boliauns : Leprechauns! I was so excited when I realized that this was about Leprechauns! I'm not quite sure why it's a big deal that the beer is made of heath instead of malt... I'm hoping we find out.  I'm kind of with the leprechaun, Tom is annoying and really should've just left well enough alone and not bothered someone needlessl...

Week 11 Extra Reading: Great Plains

Image
Extra Credit Reading Week 11 Photo by Wikimedia Commons I did something a little bit different with my notes this time.  While I read most of the stories, The Creation captivated me.  If I were to create a story, or recreate a story, rather, I'd absolutely pick this one so I'm taking more detailed notes than usual to help me with later writings!  The Creation : It's an interesting twist that the sun says the Osages are his children.  I don't think I'd realized that was part of the belief system when I was reading other stories! I also love love love the incorporation of the moon as their mother! I'm so obsessed with the moon that I'm automatically interested whenever she makes her appearance. I also didn't know that there wasn't land initially!  That would've been so scary to descend and then have nowhere to land and no way back up! AAHHHH! I was very relieved when the elk helped then find the rocks. I also love that the elk wa...

Week 11 Reading: Part B, American Indian Fairy Tales

Image
American Indian Fairy Tales, Reading Part B Photo by Pixabay The Boy Who Snared the Sun YES!!! I literally love Iagoo and his stories! I am so happy that he keeps reappearing! I love that Morning Glory keeps coming back, too. I imagine her as the cutest little girl with huge brown eyes and maybe some horrible bangs that she cut herself, just so eager to learn and be able to share her own knowledge.  I also love that this story goes back so far and that he helps them understand how it would have been different from what they are used to. It's so cool that animals used to rule the world and not men!  I'm absolutely hooked now, and have to see what mischief the little boy will cause with his new bow and arrow!  The Boy Who Snared the Sun (cont.) The little boy is such a brat! He is also so lazy! He wants to get revenge on the sun but instead of going to get the stupid rope himself he makes his sister do it after she's taken such good care of him! I w...

Week 11 Reading Notes Part A: American Indian Fairy Tales

Reading Week 11: Part A Photo by Wikimedia Commons Iagoo , the Story-teller I really liked this story.   I wasn’t super sure where it was going, but I think I already love the character of Iagoo.   It would be interesting to retell it from a past perspective and write about the stories Iagoo’s grandfather used to tell him.   I could even tell it from the perspective of Iagoo getting lost in the stories and imagining himself as part of the story.   Shin-ge-bis Fools the North Wind I love the dichotomy of the winds in this story! I also love that the South Wind was stronger than the North Wind and brought life!  By the end of this story, I was totally hooked and super excited to move on to the continuation!  Shin-ge-bis Fools the North Wind (cont.) Oooooh, I was not expecting Shin-ge-bis to actually TAUNT the North Wind! I am not surprised at all that Ka-bib-on-okka wanted revenge! I love that The North Wind melted! Havi...

Week 9 Reading Notes Part B Chinese Folk Tales

Image
Chinese Folktales Part B Week 9 Readings Photo by Wikimedia Commons The Little Hunting Dog I really loved this story.  I was so sad at the end when the scholar lost his little dog! I think if I were to attempt to adapt this story, I'd make the dog live and eventually grow big enough to become a real dog.   Fox-Fire I really enjoyed this story, too!  I like that the fox eventually got his treasure back! I don't think I'd be too interested in adapting this story, though.   The Talking Silver Foxes I didn't like this story so much.  The language wasn't very engaging and I got bored pretty easily.   Retribution I loved this story.  I think I'd like to do an adaptation of this! It would be so cool to see the water carrier in his first life before he was reborn.  I was so happy when the story came full circle!  The Night on the Battlefield I thought this story was really boring, but ...

Biography: A Day Gone Horribly Awry

Image
Photo by WikiMedia The wind flew through my hair.  I had never been so tall! I could practically touch the fluorescent lights that blinded me as they dangled precariously from the ceiling high above. I hovered above the world and for just a moment, I could do anything. At eight years old, on a sunny April afternoon, I was living.  Truly living.  Well... For an eight year old, anyways.   After finishing up my school day, I had walked myself down to the after school care classroom, and promptly finished my snack.   All I wanted was to get to the small gym that doubled as a cafeteria because Fridays were special at after school care.  Fridays were free play day.   I grabbed the hand of the fourth grader next to me.  Sara was always nice.  She didn't have many friends in her own grade, but I didn't mind.  It meant that she'd always be willing to play with me!  We entered the school gymnasium and...
